Dallas’s Passioneer Q&A

SO: Your definition of “passion” – your “WHY” for being on the planet?

Writing is my passion – I feel most alive when I am writing and sharing my writing with others. I can’t imagine what I would be doing if I were not pursuing a career as an author! I believe writing can touch people in incredible ways. One of my favorite things is hearing from a young person who is inspired to follow his or her passion after reading one of my stories.

SO: Your biggest passions for serving others, and how you’re expressing them (include hobbies, volunteering, if you wish)?

In a recent national assessment conducted by the National Literacy Institute (NLI) of fourth-grade students, 13% reported never reading for fun on their own; an additional 16% only read for fun once a month. I think this is a travesty. Reading has brought me so much excitement, confidence and has opened so many doors for me, including a tremendous college education and a career that I love. Writing and reading have given me so much fulfillment and self-confidence, and opportunities that I never would have been given otherwise – like traveling to New York to be a guest on The CBS Early Show when I was writing a column for Family Circle magazine. I feel other kids should be exposed to writing and reading as well, to encourage their self-confidence and self-expression. When I published my first book, There’s a Huge Pimple On My Nose, in fifth grade, the teachers in my elementary school asked me to talk to their classes, and then I spoke to other classes throughout the school district. I still enjoy talking to kids about writing. At the beginning of my talk, I ask the kids if any of them are interested in writing, and usually a few shy hands raise. In contrast, at the end of my talk when I ask the same question, nearly all hands raise. Many students tell me they didn’t know that kids could be writers. They didn’t know writing could be fun.

I started “Write On! For Literacy” in 2001 to encourage kids to discover confidence, joy, a means of self-expression and connection to others through reading and writing. My website www.writeonbooks.org features writing contests, book reviews, fun writing prompts, and more. I organize and teach fun writing camps for kids and award scholarships for young writers. I also hold an annual Holiday Book Drive to collect and distribute new books to disadvantaged kids — more than 11,000 books have been donated to date.

SO: Your biggest challenge(s) in expressing your passions for serving others and how you’ve addressed them?

There aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do! I sometimes tend to stretch myself too thin and take on too many projects at once, and then not be able to give anything the attention it deserves. Thankfully, I’ve been paired up with a great mentor through this wonderful organization called Youth Venture, and she has helped me organize and streamline Write On! into a much more focused organization. She helped me write a mission statement, create defineable and achieveable goals, and move forward on the projects I care most deeply about. I have learned the importance of prioritizing and delegation!

SO: They say that when you do what you love, the rest follows.  What has been your experience of prosperity, as you define it?

I try to live my life by John Wooden’s saying: “Make each day your masterpiece.” To me, “prosperity” is living by this mantra. What makes up a masterpiece for you? For me, a masterpiece day is one that includes everything I love most: my family, friends, writing, beauty, and giving to others. I also think it is very important to have balance and to be “prosperous” in all are as of your life: your relationships, health, career, community endeavors.

SO: The biggest lesson that you’ve learned in making the leap?

Following my passion has taught me not to be afraid to take risks. Take the initiative when you have an idea and make it happen yourself rather than letting fear and doubt make you wait. Because, why wait? Take small steps towards your dreams, and small steps can snowball into amazingly big opportunities!

SO: The biggest keys to your success (e.g., talent, quality, skill, etc.)?

I was fortunate to discover my passion and dive into my writing career at such an early age because I wasn’t afraid or self-conscious about my writing. I think as we get older, we tend to lose that child-like pride and confidence in ourselves and our work. I published my first book when I was in fifth grade. I wasn’t afraid of rejection, so I sent my book out to anyone and everyone I thought might read it. Sure, I didn’t hear back from a lot of them. But I did score reviews in The Los Angeles Times, Girls’ Life Magazine, Cosmo Girl Magazine, and others. Many terrific doors were opened for me because I wasn’t afraid to hear the word “no.”  I try to hold on to that child inside myself and live fearlessly.

SO: What’s your support system look like; how did you create it?

My parents and my younger brother, Greg, are my absolutely biggest fans. I am truly lucky to have been born into such a phenomenal support system. My dad is also a writer, and he is the first person who reads my work – his feedback and encouragement are invaluable. I remember when I was little, he would let me type out stories on his computer once he had filed his column for the day – how special that was! I also have had amazing teachers who have been very encouraging of my love of writing. I remember in second my teacher, Diane Sather, had me read one of my stories to the class. I got such a burst of joy from sharing what I had written with others. In college, I met other students my age who also loved to write and they remain close friends. I also was able to take a fiction writing class with Aimee Bender, a writer I have long admired, who turned out to be one the most kind, creative, and generous people I have ever met. I feel very lucky to now call her my mentor and friend. I think when building a support system, it is important to find people who will be honest with you but who also believe in you deeply. No matter what happens, I know I have a safety net of love that will catch me. That is freeing in the best way.

SO: What wisdom do you have for someone who’s scared/discouraged about their own leap?

Rejection is something that everyone has to deal with. As a writer, I joke that I could wallpaper all four of my bedroom walls with all the rejection letters I have received from editors! The important thing is not to take it personally. When I get a rejection letter, I first read the comments to see if there is any advice I can glean or ways I can improve for next time. Then, I submit my story or essay or article somewhere else. It took me more than a year to find my literary agent. A year of rejection, rejection, rejection – until finally, I found my perfect match. My agent understands my writing and has faith in my career. I just had to have the patience and perseverance to find her!

SO: What’s your next big milestone?

In August, I’m moving from California to Indiana to enter the graduate school program at Purdue University for fiction writing. I feel so honored to have been accepted to such a great program, and I know I am going to grow enormously as a writer during my three years there. I am looking forward to bringing Write On! to my new writing family and plan to start a Holiday Book Drive and Young Writers Camp at Purdue.[/private][/private]

Conquering Your Fear of Asking: 33 Ways to Get Support for Your Dreams

[private][private]This month’s Passioneering theme is “Creating Powerful Support Networks”.  That is, to thrive at what you love AND make big, positive contributions on the planet, through other people.  As a recovering do-it-myself-aholic, I know firsthand that you simply cannot succeed alone. Answered prayers come through others, and the more “others” you have, the more abundance you can receive.   Rugged individualism  may have been the American dream in the past, but now it represents a sad, lonely saga.

We recently asked several Passioneers® how they created powerful support networks on their journeys.  Below are some of our favorite responses:

Beth Remmes, Founder of Zola Goods: “I like the visual of widening circles, like ripples in a pond. The main reason I have been able to stay the course is because I have had the sense that this is a divinely-inspired mission, so first and foremost, I have a practice that starts at my center – whether it is yoga, meditation, a hike in the woods, something that keeps my connection to a power greater than myself.”

Shelly Rachanow, best-selling author of If Women Ran the World, Sh** Would Get Done :  “Richard Bach once said, ‘Argue for your limitations and sure enough they’re yours.’  I’ve made a point to surround myself with friends and family who remind me that I can do anything I choose, and who never let me tell myself otherwise.”

Bill Roth, a green entrepreneur and creator of Earth 2017:  “One great advantage of putting your neck on the line is you find out who will chop it off for a buck and who will really help you. Going through those experiences are disheartening but really valuable in the long run because you end with wonderful, trusting relationships.”

Ryan Ray, radio and TV host of WakeUP! TV:  “Aside from my own mother’s consistent and unconditional support in everything I’ve ever attempted to do in my life, I’m blessed to have a tight-knit group of friends who share my passion for inspiring change in other people’s lives. When you move bravely forward into the unknown, your courage and sincerity will attract people to you like an electromagnet. Quite honestly, you’ll be surprised where your supporters come from, more times than not being the people you’d least expect!”

Tammy Gentry, the owner of CMD Gifts and the creator of Penny Stones®.

  • “To make my dream a reality, one of my best first steps was to make an appointment with S.C.O.R.E advisors.  They helped me create my business plan, gave me invaluable critical feedback, and helped me think of my product as a business, not a hobby.
  • I have partnered with other women entrepreneurs who manufacture products sold to the gift wholesale and retail market.  Developing relationships with people who can relate to your problems, concerns, frustrations, and accomplishments adds another dimension to the rewards of owning your own business.
  • Next month, I will be joining a group of women entrepreneurs who meet once a month for three hours and discuss the challenges they face.  These women will become my Board of Advisors.  I have been looking for a support group like this and am very excited to have found one locally ( Akron , Ohio ).”

Jenny Pavlovic, Founder, Author, and Imagineer, 8 State Kate Press:

  • “Believe in yourself and your purpose. Share your positive message and supportive people will appear in your life. Notice when they do, and reach out to them. Pay attention because sometimes when the right people appear it seems like a coincidence, but is isn’t. Be prepared to act.
  • Limit the time and energy you give to negative people (even if you are related to them!). That will give you more time and energy to spend with supportive people who bring your energy up and share your passion. The law of attraction, you know…”

Patty DeDominic, Chief Coach, DeDominic & Associates:

  • “Seek out people who are already doing what YOU aspire to do.
  • Surround yourself with people with good attitudes and who are positive and resourceful
  • If you can’t Be the Change YOU wish to see.. then find people who are working to make that happen and HELP!”

Scott Gabriel Hummel, Certified Bad Ass, Professional Adventurer, www.gabrielhummel.com:

  • “Don’t quit your day job. Test the waters with your new passion before you jump ship completely.
  • Focus Hard. If you are serious about making your passion your career, spend your time accordingly.
  • Go for it. You won’t know unless you try.”

Here are 18 more ways to build your powerful Passioneer pom pom squad:

  1. Remember that when you ask for support, you’re creating an “opportunity” for someone to give.   Let go of niggling worries that you’re bothering someone by asking.
  2. Take time to clarify exactly what support you need. A business plan, even on the back of an envelope, helps.
  3. Learn to make clear, specific requests for support, including what you want and by when.
  4. NEVER EVER pre-judge another person’s ability or willingness to support you. Allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised!
  5. Create at least 3 mentoring relationships with experienced, thriving Passioneers who are several steps ahead of you.
  6. Read, read, read. Explore everything that’s ever been written and who’s been successful in your passion.
  7. For those who believe in a higher power, remember to connect with it on a regular basis through prayer, meditation, and reflection…when things are going bad AND when things are going well.
  8. Remember that your support network can be global with a reach far beyond your neighborhood.
  9. Let those you can trust know about your dreams for making a big difference and thriving.
  10. Remember that support comes in many forms, not only with shared time and finances.
  11. EVEN a naysayer can be part of your support team. What becomes possible if you actively solicit constructive criticism, without being overwhelmed?
  12. Be grateful for and regularly thank those who are already supporting you. You simply cannot appreciate them too much.
  13. Your biggest competitors can be your biggest allies, if you change your perception. What if you collaborate instead of compete?
  14. Building a support network is just as much giving as it is receiving. When you ask “How can I help you?”, the other person automatically considers how he might help you too.  So be the support that you seek!
  15. Create an advisory team of at least 12 people. Then double it. Advisory team members are those who have subject matter expertise and want to share it with your great cause.  They might also be individuals who exemplify key strengths and values that complement yours.
  16. There’s never a perfect time to ask for support. One thing’s for sure: if you wait until the “right time,” it’s too late.
  17. Being vulnerable is NOT a weakness, it’s actually a strength.  Ditto for surrendering.
  18. Remember that the bigger your dream, the bigger the challenges and the greater the naysaying. Consider that significant opposition can be the highest form of flattery and much better than apathy.

Best wishes and Happy Passioneering![/private][/private]

Our Recent Interview with Dr. LaVerne:

SO: Your definition of “passion” – your “WHY” for being on the planet?

I am passionate about motivating people to define their destiny and maximize their potential to live the life they dream about. I am the “goto guru” to answer “Everything you always wanted to know about your destiny but were afraid to ask!”

SO: Your biggest passions for serving others, and how you’re expressing them (include hobbies, volunteering, if you wish)?

I spend a great deal of my time as a minister encouraging people with insightful ways for them to be their absolute best person. In addition, right now I volunteer my time to struggling professionals and celebrities with my coaching practice that helps people in a more systematic way to discover meaning and accomplish their goals. Some others who need my services may not be able to pay me but the rewards are immense when I see them operating optimally in their various professions.

SO: Your biggest challenge(s) in expressing your passions for serving others and how you’ve addressed them?

My biggest challenge has been getting people to see their value and sticking with their own plan. I see tremendous potential in them and for them but somehow they cannot see that their success will take all the work that they are willing to invest into it and quit too soon. I know that I cannot “do” their success for them. I can only support and encourage them along the way.

SO: The biggest keys to your success (e.g., talent, quality, skill, etc.)?

I believe that what makes me successful is my unique authentic passion. People see it and feel it and know that it is genuine. People believe me when I say that I care. People are looking for authentic models that they can turn to and emulate themselves. They are looking for people who genuinely care and are willing to make the investment in them. People are also looking for someone that they can trust and be accountable to.

SO:   What has been your experience of prosperity, as you define it?

I absolutely positively love what I do! I love seeing the look on someone’s face who feels a sense of renewed value, maybe for the first time. I love hearing people say that they feel more motivated that they are going to do more with their lives and be their best possible person as well as when they say they feel a sense of clarity and direction. To me, this is “priceless” and this is the best prosperity that anyone could have. How can you put a price tag on that?

SO:  What’s the biggest lesson that you’ve learned in making the leap?

I have made several leaps in my lifetime. The most recent would be my recovery after a painful divorce. I made a decision to be my personal best and help as many people as I can and bring glory to God. I made a decision to be better and not bitter and to take responsibility for the choices that I made to get me where I am today. I blame no one. I have learned that I can make another decision to make a better life for myself by making better choices

SO: What’s your support system look like; how did you create it?

Right now I have a great support system of two very close sisters who I can talk to about anything. Then I try to maintain coaching to help me to advance in whatever area I am focusing in at the time. Right now I have a business coach. I also have a writing coach and a publishing coach. I have a spiritual life coach. These people breathe into my life and help me to persevere toward my goals in inspiring as many people as I possibly can.

SO: What wisdom do you have for someone who’s scared/discouraged about their own leap?

I would say take the plunge! You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. Ask yourself what is the worst thing that could happen? I live my life in such a way that I will die without any regrets! I never want to wish that I had done something that was in my power to do but didn’t because I was scared or discouraged. This helps to ground me and strengthen my resolve to do what I dream about in spite of the obstacles.

SO: What’s your next big milestone?

On 10-10-10, the world will come face to face with their destiny. On that date I will release my new book, “Driven By Destiny: 12 Secrets to Decode YOUR Destiny” with the foreword written by Dr. Rick Warren. This book is like having 12 coaching sessions with your own personal-life-coach-in-a-book. That is a $2400 value. This is effective and the information in it is designed to help empower millions of people to define their destiny and maximize their potential to live the life of their dreams~! This is crucial at a time where so many people are unemployed and have lost so many things due to the economy. This material will help people to become strengthened toward self improvement and prepare them with the valuable tools needed to start over again.

I am excited about this book and its launch in October. My goal is to help 100 million people to live more productive lives filled with meaning and purpose and make positive contributions to society. At the release of the book, I will be giving away a book a day to those who really need encouragement to be more productive in their life. They simply have to email me their story at TheDoctorofDestiny@aol.com about where they are at right in their life right now and where they would like to be and why they want the book. I will be making selections daily for the most noteworthy story.

With the purchase of the book on October 10, 2010, they will be able to receive the “Driven By Destiny Discovery Manual” e-book, valued at $9.99, and the “Driven By Destiny 30 Day Devotional” e-book valued at $9.99 absolutely free for buying the book offered only on that exact day. Only for those who buy the book on that day at 10:00 am they will receive a free personal “Destiny Diagnosis” where I will personally help them analyze an area of their lives that will help to align them closer with their destiny. The book is only $25.99 and presents a tremendous opportunity for people to finally get answers to their questions about destiny but was afraid to ask.

Thanks Dr. LaVerne and Happy Passioneering![/private][/private]

We recently interviewed Missy on our radio show, The Passions and Possiblities Project and you can listen to her archived show below.  We were especially struck by her desire and perseverence to shed light on an oft-tabooed topic.  A true Passioneer, thank you Missy and Happy Passioneering!

Our Written Interview with Missy

SO: Your definition of “passion” – your “WHY” for being on the planet?

That feeling of ultimate joy – when you want to “dive deep”, when you want to push through real or perceived barriers, when you want to share what you love with everyone around you.

SO: Your biggest passions for serving others, and how you’re expressing them (include hobbies, volunteering, if you wish)?

Besides WHF, I love two organizations that educate, house and feed the soul of young, at-risk children – Mercy Home for Boys and Girls and Josephinum Academy.  I am on the Leader Council at Mercy and get involved with all our events for the boys and girls there.  With Josephinum, I’m committed to bringing our messages of pelvic health to these girls and to adding to their donor base. Finally, I am passionate about music and express that by singing in our church choir, which I affectionately call the “rock ‘n roll Jesus church”!

SO: Your biggest challenge(s) in expressing your passions for serving others and how you’ve addressed them?

Most of the challenges I experience are with WHF.  Primarily it is a funding issue and a name recognition/support issue. Every year, every month, every day we need to be in front of as many people that we can – so that 10 – 20% of them will “get it” and want to help us help women.I also make sure I do a lot of yoga and other restorative work on my body and soul to keep it pumped!

SO: What has been your experience of prosperity, as you define it?

When you have all you need and then some. For me, it was getting to a place of financial self-sufficiency and buying my first house.  In our work, it is when we are recognized and accepted by the science side of where we live – the docs and PT’s.

SO:  The biggest lesson that you’ve learned in making the leap?

When confronted with a challenge or a “no” – ask three times.  It’s amazing, when you give someone a chance to see your request in a different light – with a different “ask”, how the possibilities open up.  It is also a lesson about always having a contingency plan

SO: What’s your support system look like; how did you create it?

My family, friends and business colleagues.  I started First Tuesday 14 years ago as a way to gather like minded, spiritually rich women together to make new connections and increase our base of sister support.

SO: What wisdom do you have for someone who’s scared/discouraged about their own leap?

Change is ALWAYS good.  Fear is the biggest paralyzer – fear of the unknown keeps us small and it is usually more scary to sit and ponder, than to DO.

SO: What’s your next big milestone?

I want to change legislation and health policy, so that our tips and topics of women’s pelvic health are part of what young girls learn in 5th and 7th and 9th grade health classes.  By doing so, we potentially stave off huge health care costs and the pain and suffering of girls and women long-term.[/private][/private]

Passioneer™ Ryan Ray, TV and Radio Show Host, Inspires Thousands Around the World

[private][private]

We recently interviewed TV and radio show host, Ryan Ray, on our radio program.  Ryan’s passionate about sharing the stories of those who are pursuing their dreams!   Below is his radio show archive, as well as his “Passion-ography”.

SO: Your definition of “passion” – your “WHY” for being on the planet?

People today have lost their sense of purpose – their own “WHY” for being on this planet. Instead of looking within ourselves, society has trained us to find our “WHY” externally in other people, places and things. My passion is to help people Wake UP!, remember their “WHY,” and remind them that their most heartfelt goals are still possible.

SO: Your biggest passions for serving others, and how you’re expressing them (include hobbies, volunteering, if you wish)?

In August 2008 I began reaching out to the public through a web show designed to inspire others to remember their passion. As the weeks progressed, so did our audience and soon we had outgrown the internet TV studio I had constructed in my bedroom. On April 3, 2009 “Wake UP! Explore your Passion” the TV show was born as we made our debut on LIVE television in Pasadena, CA to 40,000 cable-connected homes in addition to our regular audience of 10,000 weekly viewers through the web.

SO: Your biggest challenge(s) in expressing your passions for serving others and how you’ve addressed them?

If someone had told me that I was going to build an entire TV show, cast and crew from the ground up and that I was going to do it all on a shoestring budget, I would have laughed and thought it impossible.  Before I began down this path I had no background or formal training or experience in television production whatsoever. Needless to say, the learning curve has been tremendous. I believe that when you have a true, heart-centered passion for something, all the resources you need to be successful will make themselves available. While there have been stressful moments, it has been a dream come true and A LOT of fun!

SO: They say that when you do what you love, the rest follows.  What has been your experience of prosperity, as you define it?

In my experience, the single most common factor that people believe is holding them back from their dream is money. I believe that when the timing is right, everything will fall into place, including the money. The trick is to first become crystal-clear about your goals, today. That won’t cost a dime! Then, moving forward, focus on those things that you already have and begin putting those pieces of the puzzle into place. If your passion is true, when the timing is right and you are ready, the missing pieces will come into view, one-by-one.

SO:  The biggest lesson that you’ve learned in making the leap?

First and foremost, it’s OK if it isn’t perfect. That doesn’t mean you do your work carelessly and pay no attention to detail, it means you do the absolute best you can, focusing on every detail as well as the big picture. At the end of the day, you pat yourself on the back, focusing first on what was done well and lastly on those things that still need improvement. Secondly, even though it’s your baby, there will come a time when you have to let go. The only way we can reach our full potential is to work with others, empowering them to be the best they can be. Only then can we reach our greatest goals.

SO: The biggest keys to your success (e.g., talent, quality, skill, etc.)?

No matter how far removed your life experience may seem, there’s something you’ve learned in your past that will help you reach your current goal. I studied graphic design and dabbled in web programming. My skills as a designer have saved me huge amounts of money in creating a web presence and promotional materials for “Wake UP! Explore your Passion”.

SO: What’s your support system look like; how did you create it?

Aside from my own mother’s consistent and unconditional support in everything I’ve ever attempted to do in my life, I’m blessed to have a tight-knit group of friends who share my passion for inspiring change in other people’s lives. When you move bravely forward into the unknown, your courage and sincerity will attract people to you like an electromagnet. Quite honestly, you’ll be surprised where your supporters come from, more times than not being the people you’d least expect!

SO: What wisdom do you have for someone who’s scared/discouraged about their own leap?

Though it’s been said before, it merits being said again: you are your biggest supporter and your worst critic. Regardless of your physical surroundings and regardless of the influences in your life, you have the power within yourself to be successful in ways you never dreamed possible. The true, heart-centered desires you hold deep inside, those that always seem to peek out at you in your happiest and saddest moments, will never die and demand fulfillment. It is your duty in life to listen and act. “How” you’re going to do it should be the least of your concerns. Your job is to become clear about what you want and then take small steps toward your goals. They will continue to evolve and grow as you evolve and grow.

SO: What’s your next big milestone?

My mission, at its core, is crystal-clear: to inspire people to “Wake UP!”. Recently, we’ve returned to the airwaves, this time via an internet radio broadcast. Our goal: to expand the reach of “Wake UP! Radio” to inspire millions of people to put meaning back into their lives by working toward their most heart-felt goals.

Thanks Ryan and Happy Passioneering![/private][/private]

Do What You Love, and the Rest Will Follow: 14 More Passioneering Tips

[private][private]Last week, we spotlighted 16 tips from our Passioneer(tm) interviews about how to leap fully into what you love, as you serve others in the world.  This week, we’re continuing to share tips from our bold, talented interviewees, with the intention to inspire others who may be scared or discouraged about their own leap.

Ice Climber

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.

  • Nearly all of our Passioneers cited courage as a critical element for leaping fully into what they love.  For them, courage is NOT the absence of fear, but rather the moving forward REGARDLESS of fear.  What a huge difference!  A great book on this topic by Susan Jeffers, Ph.D.
  • Passioneers have a relationship with their challenges of “Bring it on!”   They welcome challenges as opportunities to deflate their egos, toughen their skin, AND open their hearts.  Rather than avoid challenges, Passioneers embrace them fully.
  • Making the courageous leap into your passions requires a strong faith – knowing that you are supported by a giving, abundant Universe.  Remember that the Universe (or whatever you call your higher power) IS on your side, even when it doesn’t seem like it.
  • The Passioneers who we interviewed are bulldogs when it comes to perseverence:  they do not give up and are fiercely tenacious in moving forward regardless of their circumstances.  Vince Lombardi said, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win!” (Other Lombardi quotes)
  • Successes are always right around the corner, even if you cannot see or believe them yet.

It Takes a Village to Raise a Passioneer.

  • The concept of rugged individualism is dead when it comes to unleashing your passions.   If you think that you have to go it alone, think again.  Passioneer Vitamin C = Collaboration, connection, cooperation, and community. Your booster shot for thriving!
  • The most successful Passioneers create powerful support networks that call them into greatness, challenge their comfort zones, and believe in them through thick and thin.  So, go build an “A Team” of cheerleaders who believe in you 200%, when no one else will.  The first step to building your team is to ASK.  The second step?  Be ready to RECEIVE!
  • Passioneers also proactively build a “B” team of cheerleaders who they actively recruit to their A team.  They have a positive state of mind to attract and grow strong supporters.
  • Build upon your strengths, rather than struggle to strengthen your weaknesses.  Delegate to experts in areas which are not your strengths or your passions.
  • Stop renting out mental real estate to naysayers.  The more that you resist the “dream dashers,” the more that they will persist.  What you resist persists.  A great video on this topic.

Do What You Love, Not Just What You’re Good At.

  • How do you know if you are following your true passions?  When in doubt, ask yourself, could I do and be this for the rest of my life..and not get paid?  If your answer is  unequivocally “yes,” then you are on the right track.  Or try the Passion Test.  Marsha Sinetar’s book, Do What You Love; the Money Will Follow, is excellent.
  • Your passions point to your purpose – that is, why you’re on the planet at this time.  Pay attention to them and give them space in your life.
  • Passion = contagion.   When you are on fire about something in your life, you are contagious and unstoppable.
  • Some Passioneers unleash one passion, solely and fully, during their life, while others are “serial Passioneers,” who pursue many different ones.  There is no right or wrong path to pursue your passion.

Do What You Love, and the Rest Will Follow: 16 Passioneering Tips

[private][private]Reaching for the SkyDuring this year, we have interviewed over 200 bold, talented individuals who have leaped fully into what they love, as they serve others in the world – we call them Passioneers ™.  Our intention is to inspire those who are feeling scared or discouraged about their own leap into service.  Based upon our inteviews so far, we have synthesized the following passioneering tips, and will be blogging on them, and many others, each week in 2010.   If you  have any tips or know of any Passioneers who would like to share their story in our blog, please send us their contact information.

Be A Visionary.

  • Dream big.  To create a bigger life, you must have bigger dreams.  Without a vision, the people perish.  (Proverbs 29:18)
  • Cordon off at least one focused, quiet hour, each month, for the visioning process.  If you Google “life visioning tools,” you’ll see lots of great visioning tools.   We highly recommend using Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith’s approach
  • Share your life’s vision with those you trust, and watch how much faster that it grows!
  • Keep your vision front and center, where it can inspire you everyday.  A vision journal or vision board is a great tool for this purpose. Check out vision journaling workshops by Robbi Firestone

If You Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail.

  • Create a business plan, even if it’s on the back of a napkin.  Richard Gabel’s tips on this: http://bit.ly/2102E
  • What gets written down gets done.  Plain, simple, if not easy.  Journaling is a great tool for this.  Or try writing down the top three things you must get done each day  on an index card; let that be your day’s focus.
  • As with your vision, share your business plan with others for input, ideas, and support.
  • Try our complimentary PowerLeaps LLC Express Business Plan.

If You Believe, You’re Halfway There.

  • Napoleon Hill said “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” (more quotes from Napoleon Hill).
  • If you don’t believe in your vision, very few others will.
  • Even on those days when you really don’t believe in your vision,  try faking it until you make it.  It’s amazing how contagious “acting as if” can be!
  • Faith grows over time, one demonstration at a time – kind of like a stairway that you climb, with each step being a small success.  Rome was certainly not built in one day.

Just Do It!

  • My good friend Pete DiSantis says, “Do is half of done.“  Talk is cheap, and analysis can cause paralysis!  The boldest, most successful Passioneers move forward regardless of their circumstances.
  • Take baby steps, no matter how small they are.  In the midst of feeling overwhelmed and stuck, your taking even ONE small step forward will jump start your inspiration and momentum.  A great article on this approach.
  • There is no right or wrong way to express your passions, so avoid comparing yourself to others, especially Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, celebrities, your next door neighbor, etc., etc.  You get the point…
  • Explore and experiment.  Take some risks and try on different approaches.  Most importantly, have FUN!!

Ellen Whitehurst
We recently interviewed Ellen on our Blog Talk Radio Program, and she shared some amazing insights about the road to her success.   She’s one of the brightest, most articulate, and spiritually-conscious Passioneers we’ve interviewed so far.  Thanks Ellen!

Her definition of “passion”? “That thing, that essence that animates me, that makes me smile, and makes my heart and my soul smile.”

Her biggest passions: Her son.  Feng shui, mystical, metaphysics.  And cooking and serving with food (she’s writing her second book on this topic!).

Summary quote: “There is no one less likely to have made a success of a brand than me.  And I’ve done it.  And if I can do it, anyone can”!

Biggest challenges along the road: Feeling scared and lonely after her 20-year marriage ended and deciding to pursue fully her passion for feng shui.  Says Ellen, “I so firmly believe that if you follow your passion, if you find what it is that you love, it makes it so much easier to be persistent about it.  And persistence is the key to everything on this planet, I swear to you.  You have to have a real well of persistence to get over the obstacles because the obstacles are…really opportunities to learn. And at the time you may think that something that is crushing and disappointing is the end of the road. And I will personally guarantee -I will put money behind it - that that end of the road is simply bringing you to another new road that’s going to bring you closer to what your dreams are.”

How do you know when it’s a boulder to go over or a sign to take another path? She says, “ for me, if you have a passion towards achieving or accomplishing a particular or specific goal, you’ll never get a boulder that will push you off of the path.   You’re never going the wrong way, you are going where you need to be.  If, however, you’re not that passionate about it…you don’t feel it in the seat of your soul…that’s where the concept of trust comes in.  You have to trust that you will be shown.  …Ask your higher power, whatever that is for you, ‘Am I on the right road?’    And then be open to receive the answers.  That’s about as trite as it gets, it’s as banal as it gets, but it’s also as real as it gets. If you can quiet your being and can, from your heart, from emotion, ask your higher power if you’re on the right road, I can tell you that, within 48 hours, you’ll get…confirmation.”

Natural talents/gifts: “I came in with an ability to write.”

What didn’t/doesn’t come naturally: … “the ability to get in front of people and speak”;  not having a business background

How does someone balance commitments & responsibilities with pursuing their passions? “It’s really important that when you have responsiblities, when you have commitments and you’re embarking on doing something, obviously if you feel the need to keep your 9 to 5, to keep your paycheck, temporarily, you still need to push energy forward on some level towards what you’re passionate about.   …The same sort of commitment that you have to paying the bills, to taking care of your parents, or to taking care of the kid’s tuition…that same sort of commitment has to translate into a commitment to what your passion is.  And pretty soon, before you even know it, the passion will overtake whatever the 9 – 5 is, and you will find opportunities flying at you to engage yourself in whatever it is that you’re truly interested in, and will leave the 9-5 behind.”

Definition of “prosperity” and how she is experiencing it.   “I’m going to be a capitalist and say that I define it as something with a dollar sign in front of it.  I could really throw out the line that prosperity is abundance, and I do believe that secondarily.   …I define prosperity as feeling comfortable; as not ever worrying where the next dime is going to come from, or where the next pair of shoes is going to come from, or where the next car payment is going to come from.”

Tip on handling fears: “…You can spend time laying awake in bed at night…and thinking ‘How am I supposed to make the car payment?’   That time that you’re spending worrying about it is in fact, what we call ‘feeding the hungry monster’.”  She suggests that, instead of worrying about it, you can choose to spend the time imagining all of the ways that money COULD come in to cover the car payment.   “Are you going to lay in bed and worry, or are you going to construct a visualization that has you paying it…..either way it’s a fantasy,” she notes.  “Why not choose the one that’s positive?”

…”If you feed your fear with fatted worry you’re just creating more of the same.  So don’t feed the fear.”

Her next big milestone: A second book, focusing  on food and cooking; a television show
