Passioneering Moment #12: Setting Intentions, Creating Success

I recently watched a powerful video by Rick Foster and Greg Hicks, the authors of How We Choose to Be Happy and featured presenters in one of the highly-recommended Awakening Joy programs.

Foster and Hicks discuss many aspects of setting intentions, especially how we can use them to create what we want in our lives.  The basis of their book was a series of interviews they conducted with happy people from all around the world.  In their research, they found a set of nine common happiness principles, which have held true in their ongoing work as leadership consultants.

Take their happiness survey yourself:  The Happiness Survey

Most importantly, these authors highlight the power of setting your intentions first, before setting your specific goals.

You might be saying,  “I DO set intentions.  I’m going to lose 10 pounds by Christmas and want a new job before New Year’s.  How’s that?”

Well, those are great goals, and they are not intentions.  According to Foster and Hicks, an intention is your attitude, your behavior, your desire to be or do something.  It’s what fuels your actions, attitudes, and behavior.  It’s literally your way of being, and is an active, rather than a passive, choice.  Instead of losing 10 pounds by Christmas, your intention could be to express more health and comfort in your body.

“Each decision we make, each action we take, is born out of an intention.” ~Sharon Salzberg

Unfortunately, most of us have created such deep grooves in our brains over time, that our behaviors are mostly automatic.   We operate as “toasters” – reacting with an automatic response when someone says or does something that we don’t like.  Over time, we start to believe that this automatic way of being is “just how we are” and that there’s no possibility for changing.

What’s your “toaster” way of reacting?

Guess what?  There’s hope!

Below are three tips from Foster and Hicks’ book to support you in being more intentional and happier  in your daily life:

Tip #1:  Set a Moment-to-Moment Intention.  Foster and Hicks suggest various ways of stopping the automatic patterns and choosing again.  For example, you might set a “moment to moment” intention by asking yourself “What’s my best intention in this situation?”  This takes only a few seconds.  Coupled with a few deep breaths, it’s a powerful way to reprogram your mind and become more intentional.

Question: What moment-to-moment intention works best for you?

Tip #2:  Set a Daily Intention.  Most of the happy people whom the authors interviewed have a morning ritual of intention-setting to start their day.  By doing so, you are proactively putting your attention and intention on creating something positive.  Then, when something challenging arises, you are much more able to respond, rather than react to it.

Exercise: What would be possible if you started each day with a powerful intention?  Tomorrow morning, try it out.  It could be as simple as “I intend to help,” as the authors suggest.

Tip #3:  Set Core Intentions for Your Life.  These intentions do not fluctuate over time and speak to how you want to show up in life for yourself and others.  Core intentions are broad and are guides for living.   For example, I’ve set the intention to be a compassionate, authentic person who listens deeply to others.   I have also set the lifelong intention to express greater delight and joy in my life.  When I start my morning with these intentions and remind myself of them throughout the day, I tend to have much more connection, joy, and delight.  Imagine that!

Question:  What core intentions have you set for your life?  What other ones might you set?

Passioneering Vibrancy: Nourish Your Mind, Body and Spirit

Today I woke up with a splitting headache and stiff upper back. This is not the first morning that I have felt this crappy; yet today I noticed my half-assed honoring of my body temple for the past two months.   Yes, I am a fitness trainer who exercises regularly and eats healthfully.  Yes, I challenge clients to follow the same regimen; yet I often treat my body as if it were an inanimate machine instead of a precious, dynamic organism.  Did I tell myself this morning “Great job, Sue, let’s nourish YOU of today”?  Nope.  Instead, I berated my body with negative comments such as “You’re falling apart.” “Get with the program.” “Suck it up and get going.”  Can you relate?  You may have heard the saying that, if you treated your car the way that you treat your body, you would be walking, not driving.

On your last airline trip, do you remember the flight attendant’s asking you to put on your oxygen mask before helping others? It makes perfect sense to have oxygen flowing in your own lungs before you attempt to help others breathe, right?   So why do many of us in the helping and healing professions neglect our own sacred vessels, by depriving them of the basics of good food, rest, exercise, and play?

The definition of “good health” isn’t simply the absence of illness or disease.  Rather, it is the ability to support not only your own bodily functions and needs, but to also lend support and service to others in need.  This optimum state of physical well being is what I call “overflow,” which requires the tending of your mind, body, and spirit.

Quiz: If you were to rate your body’s vibrancy right now, what would it be?  (1 being “dragging big time;” 10 being “leaping for the sky.”)  Now, what’s between you and being a 10 on a more consistent basis?

What stands between me and being a consistent 10, is the eighteen inches between my head and my heart:   the crazy belief that I must do, do, do, in order to be of service and real value in the world.  Unlike other cultures, we in the U.S. do not highly regard or reward “being”.  Instead, our culture’s success stories highlight rough and tough individuals who overcame big challenges and accomplished well-recognized feats, regardless of the toll on their bodies.   Ironically, the U.S. heritage of pioneering spirit and rugged individualism does not translate into happiness.  For example, we ranked much lower than did other countries in the categories of “being well-rested” and “having a work/life balance” (2011 Legatum).

In the spirit of supporting physical vibrancy in Passioneers who seek to thrive as you give back, here are five tips for experiencing more overflow in your body temple:

1) Healthful Eating. The technology adage of “garbage in, garbage out” is very relevant for our physical bodies.  Eight years ago a dear friend helped me to organic-ize my life and make better choices about what I put into my body.  Most recently, I have eliminated meat (or “anything with a face,” my friend says).  Each day,  I also drink at least one gallon of water, eat five or more small meals, and avoid processed foods and additives.

2) Rest. Most American are sleep-deprived and do not give themselves the requisite eight to nine hours of sleep for optimal health.  Some of my hotshot friends attest that they subsist on five hours or less of sleep each night.   Well, that’s when I push the B.S. button and say that the self-care “fumes” that they live on are going to kill them, eventually.   Schedule your days so that you have plenty of rest, and your body will thank you.  Profusely.

3) Exercise. As you age, the importance of exercise increases exponentially.   In this electronic age, it is easy to forget the hazards of sitting in front of a computer or big screen TV for endless hours.  Find an activity that you adore and an accountability buddy who will enjoy it with you. Here in the Pacific Northwest, my favorite activities are hiking, walking, and being out on the glorious water. Find time to exercise at least three times this week.   If you already exercise regularly, explore a new activity and a new location.

4) Quiet Reflection. In today’s society, we are bombarded with an overwhelming stimuli from a plethora of sources.  It is easy to go several days without any quiet time, let alone time for self-reflection.  A dear friend once told me that meditation would transform my life, and I didn’t believe her.  She was absolutely right. Now I create an appointment in my Google calendar every day for 30 minutes or more of meditation. While I don’t always honor the appointment, I do set the intention.   What would become possible if you created at least 15 minutes of quiet time this upcoming week?  Test it out!

5) Play. I must confess that I don’t experience enough joy, delight and play, which includes time with friends, music, my dogs, in nature, writing, dancing, and travel.   What does play look like for you?   Last month I took a fun, short trip to Southern California and surprised myself  with how much of a blast I had:  walking the beach, exploring new restaurants, meeting old and new friends, and meditating on a bench overlooking the Pacific Ocean.   This week, book at least one hour of play time in your calendar.  Bonus points if you invite a partner in play!

Tips for Thriving as You Give Back in the World

Passioneer® Melissa Plaskoff, Founder and CEO of Lemons to Aid

  • Figure out what speaks to you.
  • Decide how much of a commitment you want to give to your passion.
  • Find a way to make it happen (it may be a fun way, volunteering, starting a business) and it will all work itself out. When you find your passion, it really is simple. I’m doing it now!

Passioneer Paula Caligiuri, Author and Career Coach

  • You cannot own your job but you can own your career.  Stay in control of your own development.
  • Have a well-formulated plan on achieving your career goal.  Sometimes one aspect of your career may need to fund another.
  • Manage all of your resources well:  time, money, energy.  Use your discretionary resources to move you closer to your career goal.
  • Paula’s full passionography: click here.

Passioneer Stephanie A. Jones, Political/Social Scientist, Founder of Geek Nerd Wonk

  • You must be prepared to work harder than you can conceivably imagine.  That means a 9-5 job to keep a roof over your head, and another 6 hours per day devoted to your true passion and/or volunteering, to whatever feels most authentic to you.  If you do not work 14-16 hours a day you will never escape your 9-5 job, when the goal is to be so successful at your authentic job you can do IT alone for 14-16 hours a day.
  • There is no vacancy waiting for you.  You have to claim your space. There is no room at the top just waiting for your particular brilliance, ready and willing to step to the side to enable your joining the hallowed ranks.  Educate yourself, give of yourself, establish your credibility, and then march in and claim your space.  Then work twice as hard to maintain your right to be there.
  • If you tell the truth. 100% of the time, you never have to remember anything you have ever said.

Passioneering Tip #13: Persevering in Your Passions

[private][private]Perseverance is not about struggling, fighting, or forcing something to happen. It IS about putting more air into your tires so that when your rubber meets the inevitable rocky roads, you keep rollin’, rollin’, rollin’. You CAN appreciate the ride, even if you’re holding on for dear life!

Passioneer Challenge
Consider an area of your life where you feel as if you are facing many roadblocks. Ask yourself (or your higher power) these two questions, with an open heart and mind: “Who am I to be in this situation, and what am I to know?” When you are really ready and willing to hear the answers, they will come, and when you shift out of doing and into being, infinite possibilities emerge.

Passioneering Tip #5

…It is not as scary as it appears. You’ll plan, but at some point you need to make a leap and have faith in yourself and your abilities to make your dreams come true. I always felt that if someone else did it, I can do it too.

Do What You Love, and the Rest Will Follow: 14 More Passioneering Tips

[private][private]Last week, we spotlighted 16 tips from our Passioneer(tm) interviews about how to leap fully into what you love, as you serve others in the world.  This week, we’re continuing to share tips from our bold, talented interviewees, with the intention to inspire others who may be scared or discouraged about their own leap.

Ice Climber

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.

  • Nearly all of our Passioneers cited courage as a critical element for leaping fully into what they love.  For them, courage is NOT the absence of fear, but rather the moving forward REGARDLESS of fear.  What a huge difference!  A great book on this topic by Susan Jeffers, Ph.D.
  • Passioneers have a relationship with their challenges of “Bring it on!”   They welcome challenges as opportunities to deflate their egos, toughen their skin, AND open their hearts.  Rather than avoid challenges, Passioneers embrace them fully.
  • Making the courageous leap into your passions requires a strong faith – knowing that you are supported by a giving, abundant Universe.  Remember that the Universe (or whatever you call your higher power) IS on your side, even when it doesn’t seem like it.
  • The Passioneers who we interviewed are bulldogs when it comes to perseverence:  they do not give up and are fiercely tenacious in moving forward regardless of their circumstances.  Vince Lombardi said, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win!” (Other Lombardi quotes)
  • Successes are always right around the corner, even if you cannot see or believe them yet.

It Takes a Village to Raise a Passioneer.

  • The concept of rugged individualism is dead when it comes to unleashing your passions.   If you think that you have to go it alone, think again.  Passioneer Vitamin C = Collaboration, connection, cooperation, and community. Your booster shot for thriving!
  • The most successful Passioneers create powerful support networks that call them into greatness, challenge their comfort zones, and believe in them through thick and thin.  So, go build an “A Team” of cheerleaders who believe in you 200%, when no one else will.  The first step to building your team is to ASK.  The second step?  Be ready to RECEIVE!
  • Passioneers also proactively build a “B” team of cheerleaders who they actively recruit to their A team.  They have a positive state of mind to attract and grow strong supporters.
  • Build upon your strengths, rather than struggle to strengthen your weaknesses.  Delegate to experts in areas which are not your strengths or your passions.
  • Stop renting out mental real estate to naysayers.  The more that you resist the “dream dashers,” the more that they will persist.  What you resist persists.  A great video on this topic.

Do What You Love, Not Just What You’re Good At.

  • How do you know if you are following your true passions?  When in doubt, ask yourself, could I do and be this for the rest of my life..and not get paid?  If your answer is  unequivocally “yes,” then you are on the right track.  Or try the Passion Test.  Marsha Sinetar’s book, Do What You Love; the Money Will Follow, is excellent.
  • Your passions point to your purpose – that is, why you’re on the planet at this time.  Pay attention to them and give them space in your life.
  • Passion = contagion.   When you are on fire about something in your life, you are contagious and unstoppable.
  • Some Passioneers unleash one passion, solely and fully, during their life, while others are “serial Passioneers,” who pursue many different ones.  There is no right or wrong path to pursue your passion.

Do What You Love, and the Rest Will Follow: 16 Passioneering Tips

[private][private]Reaching for the SkyDuring this year, we have interviewed over 200 bold, talented individuals who have leaped fully into what they love, as they serve others in the world – we call them Passioneers ™.  Our intention is to inspire those who are feeling scared or discouraged about their own leap into service.  Based upon our inteviews so far, we have synthesized the following passioneering tips, and will be blogging on them, and many others, each week in 2010.   If you  have any tips or know of any Passioneers who would like to share their story in our blog, please send us their contact information.

Be A Visionary.

  • Dream big.  To create a bigger life, you must have bigger dreams.  Without a vision, the people perish.  (Proverbs 29:18)
  • Cordon off at least one focused, quiet hour, each month, for the visioning process.  If you Google “life visioning tools,” you’ll see lots of great visioning tools.   We highly recommend using Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith’s approach
  • Share your life’s vision with those you trust, and watch how much faster that it grows!
  • Keep your vision front and center, where it can inspire you everyday.  A vision journal or vision board is a great tool for this purpose. Check out vision journaling workshops by Robbi Firestone

If You Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail.

  • Create a business plan, even if it’s on the back of a napkin.  Richard Gabel’s tips on this: http://bit.ly/2102E
  • What gets written down gets done.  Plain, simple, if not easy.  Journaling is a great tool for this.  Or try writing down the top three things you must get done each day  on an index card; let that be your day’s focus.
  • As with your vision, share your business plan with others for input, ideas, and support.
  • Try our complimentary PowerLeaps LLC Express Business Plan.

If You Believe, You’re Halfway There.

  • Napoleon Hill said “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” (more quotes from Napoleon Hill).
  • If you don’t believe in your vision, very few others will.
  • Even on those days when you really don’t believe in your vision,  try faking it until you make it.  It’s amazing how contagious “acting as if” can be!
  • Faith grows over time, one demonstration at a time – kind of like a stairway that you climb, with each step being a small success.  Rome was certainly not built in one day.

Just Do It!

  • My good friend Pete DiSantis says, “Do is half of done.“  Talk is cheap, and analysis can cause paralysis!  The boldest, most successful Passioneers move forward regardless of their circumstances.
  • Take baby steps, no matter how small they are.  In the midst of feeling overwhelmed and stuck, your taking even ONE small step forward will jump start your inspiration and momentum.  A great article on this approach.
  • There is no right or wrong way to express your passions, so avoid comparing yourself to others, especially Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, celebrities, your next door neighbor, etc., etc.  You get the point…
  • Explore and experiment.  Take some risks and try on different approaches.  Most importantly, have FUN!!
